Plot Summary

In the mystical world of Aldryn College for Lunar Magics, Emory, a healing mage with a mediocre reputation, finds herself at the center of a deadly mystery. A tragic night in the Dovermere sea caves claimed the lives of her classmates, leaving her as the sole survivor.

Strangely, she gains uncontrollable and powerful abilities that could shatter her life if discovered. Desperate for control, Emory seeks help from Baz, a reclusive student well-versed in dark magic. Together, they uncover a secret society linked to the drownings.

As Emory delves deeper, the supposedly deceased students start washing ashore, only to die mysteriously.

Amidst dark powers and hidden secrets, Emory navigates a world of privilege and peril, all while unraveling the fate she was never meant to escape.

Book Review

I was instantly captivated by the intricate magical system based on lunar phases, making the story both imaginative and relatable.

Emory and Baz, the protagonists, are skillfully developed, their struggles and growth deeply resonating with readers.

Emory’s journey from mediocrity to mastering her extraordinary powers is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. Baz’s complexity adds depth, his inner conflict and determination making him a character to root for.

The pacing, though gradual initially, kept me engaged. The suspenseful atmosphere will weave around you like an intricate spell, slowly revealing the layers of mystery and intrigue.

While reading the book, I found myself wondering, “If I were in Emory’s shoes, how would I cope with suddenly having immense power, especially when I was used to being ordinary? How far would I go to unravel the truth, even if it meant facing terrifying magic and dangerous secrets?”

The integration of the enigmatic book, “Song of the Drowned Gods,” adds an extra layer of allure to the narrative. The emotional depth, especially in handling themes like grief, guilt, and self-discovery, adds a human touch to the fantastical elements.

Likewise, the audiobook narration, led by talented voice actors, enhances the immersive experience. Gary Furlong, Shakira Shute, and Toni Frutin breathe life into the characters, making their emotions tangible.

Some criticism

While the meticulous exposition enriches the world, the initial chapters might overwhelm readers seeking immediate gratification. The story’s deliberate pacing, while deliberate, demands patience from those accustomed to swift plot progression.

Additionally, some readers might find the complexity of the magical system initially daunting, requiring attentive reading to fully grasp its intricacies.

Read it or skip it?
