The story of The Light in Hidden Places revolves around the life of Stefania Podgórska, who had an unhappy childhood on her farm in Poland. At the age of 13, Stefania moves to the city of Przemyśl, where she lives with two of her older sisters and works at the Diamants’ shop. Despite belonging to different religions, Stefania, a Catholic, develops a warm relationship with the Jewish Diamant family, particularly Mrs. Diamant. Over time, Stefania grows close to the family and even begins a romantic relationship with one of the Diamant sons, Izio, with plans to marry.
Unfortunately, World War II breaks out, and Nazi Germany invades Poland, forming a pact with Russia, which takes over Stefania’s side of Przemyśl. Amid the surreal destruction, Stefania and the Diamants find themselves hiding in a cellar to survive. Later on, when Nazi Germany declares war on Russia, the bombing starts again, and the Nazis occupy Stefania’s side of Przemyśl.
They begin spreading virulent anti-Semitic propaganda, leading to widespread vandalism and harassment of Jewish businesses such as the Diamants’ shop. The situation becomes dire when the Nazis stop Mrs. Diamant in the street and forcefully take away her boots.

Meanwhile, the Nazis take Izio away to a work camp. Emilika assists Stefania in forging papers, allowing her to take a train to visit Izio. Stefania even kisses the camp guard’s cheek to gain access to speak with Izio and plan their escape. However, the plan fails due to train delays, and the Nazis torture and kill Izio in front of Stefania, leaving her emotionally traumatized.

To make matters worse, the nurses report that they suspect there are rats in the attic. Stefania worries that their discovery could put the Jews in danger, so she tries to convince the SS man who comes to investigate that there are no rats. She also takes the opportunity to inform him of the nurses’ brutal behavior towards her and the Jews. To her surprise, the SS man sympathizes with her and takes her side.
Stefania faces a dilemma when she learns that her factory is relocating to Berlin and she must go with them unless she can obtain a doctor’s note and medical card to prove her health is too poor to travel. During her medical exam, the doctor conducts unethical experiments on her, but she manages to acquire the necessary documents. The doctors attempt to take her back to Berlin for further study, but she manages to escape.
As the Russian army advances into Poland, they liberate the city and Stefania is hailed as a hero for her courageous efforts to save Jewish lives. She realizes that she has developed feelings for Max and they share a kiss.
