The attention to detail in the history, cultures, and magic system was simply awe-inspiring, and I was mesmerized by the sheer depth and complexity of the fictional world I was about to explore.

Wow, was this book fantastic! Honestly, I’m struggling to think of a book that’s just as well written, well plotted, and just so well done overall. I was in love with A Day Of Fallen Night from the very first chapter right up until the last page. I haven’t read Priory of the Orange Tree yet, but I am so excited for it now after reading this book.

Story

In “A Day of Fallen Night,” Samantha Shannon presents a world where dragons and wyverns are real, and their existence shapes the lives of the people who inhabit this universe.

The shared myth of the Nameless One, a deadly dragon whose fire can turn the world to ash, looms large over the story. Each country has its own version of events surrounding the Nameless One, and as the story unfolds, an eruption of the Dreadmount and a series of disturbing events lead people to believe that perhaps the Nameless One, or something equally dangerous, has returned to threaten humanity once again.

I was particularly impressed with how Shannon portrays strong, independent women who defy societal expectations and fight for their beliefs.

The bond of sisterhood and the importance of female friendships are also central themes in the book, adding depth and emotional resonance to the story.

Unresolved Mysteries

While “A Day of Fallen Night” is a standalone prequel to “The Priory of the Orange Tree,” readers may find some aspects of the story unresolved.

Certain mysteries, such as the dream connection, Canthe’s real identity, the meaning of the magic stones, and the true story of Cleolind, are left open for interpretation. However, these unresolved elements do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story and may be addressed in future installments, as Samantha Shannon has plans for two more books set in this world.
