Q&A with Todd Thomas

Q: What is your book about and what inspired you to write this book?

A: Hyperscale” tells the real story behind the world’s fastest-growing energy demand — and the extraordinary opportunity it represents. As data centers evolve into power producers and partners in grid stability, this book makes clear that the future of clean energy and digital infrastructure are now inseparable. It’s a rare, insightful look at how technology leaders and energy innovators must work together to build a net-zero economy that actually scales. For anyone committed to decarbonization and reliability, this is a must-read.

Q: When did you start writing, and what made you decide to publish this book?

A: I wrote and published my first book, Unleashing Abundant Energy, a years ago. The book quickly became an Amazon best seller. AI and Energy are a hot topic right now. This led to my second and third books, completing the Unleashing Abundant Energy Trilogy. Hyperscale is now my 4th book, and 4th Amazon best seller. Hyperscale dives in specifically into the massive impact AI Data Centers are having on the demand and growth of global energy capacity and all that entails.

Q: What themes or messages do you hope readers take away from your book?

A: Demand for energy is driving a new industrial revolution and new innovations that will reshape how we think about the world and energy.

Q: Were there any real-life experiences that influenced your story or characters?

A: I am the founder and CEO of Woodchuck.ai, a climate impact startup utilizing AI to divert construction waste into clean renewable energy.

Q: What question do you wish readers would ask you about the book?

A: Communities everywhere are grappling with the tension between the resource demands of data centers and the desire to remain at the forefront of innovation and job creation. This book offers a grounded but optimistic view of how that balance might be achieved. I am particularly struck by its argument that the greatest opportunity for environmental progress lies not only in operational efficiency but in how we design and build these facilities from the start

Q: Do you have a favorite quote or moment from the book you’d like to share?

A: The story of the data center is the story of human ambition—to make intelligence abundant, accessible, and sustainable. Yet this ambition demands humility. The same technology that expands our reach also tests the limits of our planet’s resilience. Balancing those forces will define not just the next chapter of the digital revolution but the survival of civilization itself.

If the last century was powered by fossil fuels, the next will be powered by data—and by the clean, circular, and cosmic energy systems that make data possible. The frontier of intelligence is no longer confined to servers or cities; it is emerging in fusion cores, orbital solar fields, bioenergy refineries, and reclaimed landfills—the physical and planetary fabric of progress.

In that convergence lies the promise of a new era:

a world where computing power and clean power grow together,
where the pursuit of intelligence accelerates decarbonization,
and where the infrastructure of progress finally aligns with the sustainability of the planet—and beyond.

That is the true Power Shift—and it has only just begun.

Q: What was the biggest challenge in writing or publishing it?

A: The world of AI, Data Centers, and the explosion in energy demand is developing so fast, its nearly impossible to stay ahead of the technology. By the time the book is published there are already new innovations and developments that occured between the time the book was written and when it hit the shelves.

Q: What’s next for you as a writer?

A: Book 5; Terawatt will be out this summer.
