Q&A with Joe Vandermark
Q: What is your book about and what inspired you to write this book?
A: My book Team Up for Cloud Success is about building high performing, customer focused teams that deliver results and create lasting impact. It draws from my experience leading cloud architects at Microsoft and shows that technology alone does not win. It is the people behind it who make the difference. The book offers practical steps for hiring with empathy, empowering people with trust, uniting across silos, measuring what matters, standing strong in challenges, and building a culture that endures.
What inspired me to write it was both personal and professional. Raising five boys taught me the value of teamwork at home, while my own fight with thyroid cancer showed me how resilience depends on the people around you. Leading cloud teams for some of the largest manufacturers confirmed that real success comes when teams pull together with empathy, grit, and a focus on clients. This book tells that story, shaped by scars, victories, and the belief that strong teams change everything.
Q: When did you start writing, and what made you decide to publish this book?
A: I started writing a few years ago with my first book A Guide to Cloud Success, which shared the foundations of how to align technology and people for real business outcomes. That experience showed me the power of putting ideas into words that others can use and build upon.
With Team Up for Cloud Success, I wanted to go deeper. I had seen again and again that the real differentiator in cloud projects is not the technology itself but the teams that bring it to life. Publishing this second book felt like the right way to pass along lessons I have lived through so others can build stronger, more resilient teams.
As for me, I have spent more than thirty years in technology, the last nine at Microsoft where I lead Cloud Solution Architects focused on US manufacturers. Alongside my career, I am a husband and father of five boys, rooted in Minnesota. Family, faith, and community have shaped who I am and the way I lead. I believe that resilience, empathy, and trust are as important in business as they are in life, and that conviction runs through everything I write.
Q: Which character was the most fun—or most challenging—to write, and why?
A: Since Team Up for Cloud Success is not a novel with fictional characters, the “characters” in the book are really the people and real-life stories that bring the lessons to life. The most fun stories to write were the ones about team members who surprised me with creativity and grit.
For example, I loved telling the story of Jenna, who came from a non-technical background but asked questions no one else thought of and uncovered a monitoring gap that saved a client from outages. Capturing that curiosity and turning it into a teaching moment was both fun and rewarding.
The most challenging stories to write were the ones about failure. Describing hires who had all the certifications but lacked empathy, or projects that stumbled because of silos or missed preparation, was not easy. Reliving those moments meant revisiting frustration and loss. But those challenges are what shaped me most as a leader, and including them makes the book honest and useful. I wanted readers to see both sides…the wins that inspire and the hard lessons that push growth.
Q: What themes or messages do you hope readers take away from your book?
A: The main themes I hope readers take away from Team Up for Cloud Success are heart, trust, and legacy. Skills and technology are important, but it is empathy, grit, and curiosity that transform a group of individuals into a resilient team. Trust empowers people to take ownership and innovate, while collaboration breaks down silos and keeps the focus on clients.
Another key message is that success is not about short term wins but about building something that lasts. When teams obsess over their clients, measure what truly matters, and stand strong through setbacks, they create a culture that can endure change and grow stronger with each challenge.
Above all, I want readers to see that leadership is not about being the smartest person in the room. It is about building others up, creating unity, and leaving a legacy where people feel valued, clients feel cared for, and results speak for themselves.
Q: Were there any real-life experiences that influenced your story or characters?
A: Yes, almost every lesson in Team Up for Cloud Success comes directly from real-life experiences. Leading cloud teams at Microsoft gave me countless examples of what works and what does not when it comes to teamwork, client focus, and resilience. Stories like Sarah turning around a high pressure Quarterly Business Review, or Priya leading through an outage that threatened a manufacturer’s production line, are drawn from real situations that taught me lasting lessons.
On a personal level, raising five boys showed me the importance of unity, patience, and grit, while my thyroid cancer battle reinforced how survival and growth depend on the people around you. Those experiences shaped how I see leadership and why I emphasize empathy, trust, and resilience. So while there are no fictional characters, every story is rooted in people I have worked with and moments that tested us and ultimately made us stronger.
Q: What question do you wish readers would ask you about the book?
A: One question I wish readers would ask is: “How do you live out these lessons in your own daily leadership, beyond the pages of the book?”
My answer is that I try to model the principles every day, whether at Microsoft, in my franchise business, or at home with my family. I check in with my teams not just on goals but on how they are doing personally. I celebrate small wins, encourage people to take risks, and step in to coach when setbacks happen.
At home, raising five boys has taught me that patience, trust, and resilience are not optional…they are the foundation for growth. Writing this book was not about putting ideas on paper and leaving them there. It was about holding myself accountable to live them out, so that the teams I lead and the clients I serve experience the impact of heart, trust, and collaboration every day.
Q: Do you have a favorite quote or moment from the book you’d like to share?
A: Yes, one of my favorite quotes in the book is “Hire character. Train skill.” by Peter Schutz. That line anchors the first chapter and sets the tone for the entire book. It captures the idea that technical skills can be taught, but empathy, grit, and curiosity are what truly make a person invaluable to a team.
A favorite moment I share is the story of Mark, a new hire who didn’t have a long list of certifications but showed real heart during a plant outage. Instead of overwhelming the client with jargon, he calmly explained the issue, built trust, and turned frustration into loyalty. That moment reminded me why leading with heart creates lasting impact, and it is one I return to often as both a leader and a coach.
Q: What was the biggest challenge in writing or publishing it?
A: The biggest challenge in writing Team Up for Cloud Success was balancing honesty with usefulness. I wanted the book to be practical, with frameworks and tools people could use right away, but also real enough to show the setbacks, failures, and tough lessons behind the wins. Reliving some of the harder stories…like losing a client because of silos or watching a project stumble from skipped preparation…was not easy, but leaving them out would have made the book less authentic.
On the publishing side, the challenge was knowing when it was ready. With so many stories and lessons gathered over years at Microsoft and beyond, it was tempting to keep adding more. I had to remind myself that the book did not need to capture everything, only the most important lessons that could help others build strong, resilient teams.
Q: What’s next for you as a writer?
A: What’s next for me as a writer is to keep building on the themes of teamwork, leadership, and customer focus. Team Up for Cloud Success was my second book, and it laid the foundation for how strong teams drive lasting impact. I am already sketching ideas for follow up projects that go deeper into the human side of leadership, including how to lead with empathy in high pressure environments and how to scale culture across growing organizations.
I also plan to continue writing articles, newsletters, and posts that make these lessons practical for both business leaders and everyday teams. My goal is not just to publish books but to keep sharing stories and tools that help people build teams they are proud of. Whether it becomes a sequel or a new angle on leadership, I see writing as part of my long term calling to encourage others to lead with heart, resilience, and vision.
