About the Book

Q&A with J.S. Holloway
Q: What inspired you to write Neon Veil?
A: I’ve been interested in the rise of AI, organoids, and transhumanism for a while — ever since the sci-fi movies of my childhood. I’m also a big anime and cyberpunk fan, so it seemed natural to fit these things together. I hadn’t seen a story where the AI is looking for a human host before. I also only ever see Hollywood body types in media, and I wanted to write diverse body types. The main love interest is a plus-size woman, Rin has cybernetics that often break down, and we see some subversion of the damsel in distress trope.
Q: When did you start writing, and what made you decide to publish?
A: Pretty recently, actually — this is my first book. Although I now have the sequel finished and a third book in the trilogy about to go into editing.
Q: Which character was the most fun — or most challenging — to write?
A: I have to say Rin. She started as a side character but grew more and more central. She swears pretty much in every sentence and is brutally honest. As someone more reserved, I found writing her quite cathartic.
Q: What themes do you hope readers take away?
A: There’s depth beyond “hot fat girl and cool hacker fast-paced thriller.” The line between humans and technology is getting increasingly thin.
Q: Were there any real-life experiences that influenced the story?
A: I’ve worked in tech for some years, and I see the encroachment of AI all the time — as well as the worry people have about it, especially in creative spaces.

Q: Do you have a favourite quote from the book?
A: “Effective control requires the illusion of choice.”
Q: What was the biggest challenge in writing or publishing it?
A: The book went through several iterations and is barely recognisable from where it started. But without a shadow of a doubt, the hardest thing is marketing.
Q: What’s next for you as a writer?
A: The sequel, The Ascendant, is out in a few weeks, and the trilogy will be complete with Ghost War, which is going into editing soon.
