Q&A with Dr. Shane West
Q: What is your book about and what inspired you to write this book?
A: Faith, Fitness, and Food is about living a fully aligned life — spiritually, physically, and emotionally. It explores how health is more than appearance or performance; it’s stewardship. The book connects faith with everyday habits like movement, rest, nutrition, and community, showing how caring for the body can be an act of worship rather than obsession. At its core, it’s about sustainable transformation rooted in grace, discipline, and purpose.
This book was born out of lived experience, not a sudden idea. As a soldier, educator, husband, and father, I spent years operating in “push through” mode. I was driven, disciplined, and often depleted. I trained hard, worked relentlessly, and wore exhaustion like a badge of honor. Over time, that mindset began to cost me physically, spiritually, and relationally.
What changed everything was realizing that God wasn’t calling me to grind harder; He was calling me to steward better. Injuries, burnout, moments of forced rest, and quiet conversations with God revealed that strength isn’t built only through effort, but through rhythm. Fitness became faith in motion. Food became gratitude and fellowship. Rest became obedience instead of weakness.
I wrote this book because I saw the same struggle in others; people chasing health without peace, discipline without joy, and transformation without direction. Faith, Fitness, and Food is my invitation to slow down, realign, and rediscover that true wellness flows from living in step with God’s design, not the world’s expectations.
Q: When did you start writing, and what made you decide to publish this book?
A: I’ve been writing scholarly work for academia for years, but this book came from a very different place.
It didn’t start as a research project or a manuscript with publication in mind. What began as personal reflection, journaling through injuries, burnout, and spiritual recalibration, gradually turned into something bigger. I wasn’t trying to write a book at first; I was trying to understand why discipline without balance was leaving me drained instead of fulfilled. Over time, those reflections became chapters, and those chapters became a message I realized wasn’t just for me.
I decided to publish when it became clear that the struggles I was working through weren’t unique. I saw the same patterns in my students, my friends, and the people I trained alongside; people working hard, striving for health and success, but feeling disconnected, exhausted, or stuck. I felt called to share what God had been teaching me: that true transformation doesn’t come from grinding harder, but from aligning faith, fitness, and daily habits with purpose and grace.
As for me, I’m a husband, a father, a veteran, and an educator. I’ve spent much of my life in environments that valued resilience, discipline, and perseverance, and those things matter. But I’ve also learned that strength without rest leads to burnout, and discipline without faith leads to emptiness. Today, my work sits at the intersection of faith, health, and leadership. I care deeply about helping people build sustainable lives; physically strong, spiritually grounded, and rooted in community.
This book is an extension of that mission. It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. It’s about showing up faithfully, stewarding what God has entrusted to you, and becoming healthy in ways that last.
Q: Which character was the most fun—or most challenging—to write, and why?
A: This book is nonfiction, so there weren’t characters in the traditional sense. But in many ways, I was the most challenging, and at times, the most fun “character” to write.
Each transformation I describe represents a different version of myself shaped by seasons of discipline, failure, growth, and faith. One of those transformations was especially fun to revisit on the page… and incredibly sore to live through. It pushed me physically, mentally, and spiritually, and writing about it meant being honest about both the victories and the limits I hit along the way.
The challenge wasn’t describing the workouts or the results; it was being vulnerable enough to write about what those seasons revealed: pride, perseverance, dependence on God, and the lessons learned when strength alone wasn’t enough. In that sense, the hardest character to write about was the most familiar one because it required telling the truth, not just the hitting the highlight reel.
Q: What themes or messages do you hope readers take away from your book?
A: At its core, I hope readers walk away understanding that health is about alignment — not perfection. Faith, fitness, and food aren’t separate lanes of life; they’re deeply connected, and when they work together, they shape who we become.
I want readers to see that discipline and grace are not opposites. You can pursue strength, structure, and consistency without losing compassion for yourself. Growth happens when we stop chasing quick fixes and start stewarding what God has entrusted to us; our bodies, our time, and our purpose.
Above all, I hope the book reminds people that transformation isn’t just physical. Real change begins internally through faith, reflection, and daily obedience. Whether someone is rebuilding after failure, seeking balance, or simply wanting to live with greater intention, my prayer is that this book encourages them to move forward with hope, humility, and trust that God is present in every step of the journey.
Q: Were there any real-life experiences that influenced your story or characters?
A: Absolutely. Every chapter of this book is rooted in real life. Faith, Fitness, and Food is nonfiction, and the stories and transformations throughout it are shaped by my own experiences as a soldier, educator, husband, and father.
My time in the military taught me discipline, resilience, and the cost of neglecting rest and recovery. My work in healthcare and education have shown me how often people struggle with balance; physically, mentally, and spiritually. And my life at home, especially around the dinner table with my family, revealed how food, faith, and presence intersect in the most ordinary but meaningful ways.
The injuries, setbacks, moments of burnout, and seasons of rebuilding are all real. So are the lessons; learning to see my body as stewardship rather than a project, understanding rest as obedience, and recognizing that health is ultimately about serving others well. Those lived experiences didn’t just influence the book; they are the book.
Q: What question do you wish readers would ask you about the book?
A: Question:
What does faith actually look like in everyday health decisions — not just in church or prayer, but in real life?
My answer:
Faith shows up in the ordinary, often unglamorous choices we make every day. It’s in choosing rest when the world tells you to grind. It’s in eating with intention instead of impulse. It’s in moving your body not to chase perfection, but to honor what God has entrusted to you.
This book isn’t about dramatic overnight transformation; it’s about alignment. Aligning your habits with your beliefs. Aligning your body with your purpose. Aligning your health with your calling. I hope readers walk away realizing that faith isn’t separate from fitness or food. It is woven into every decision, every routine, and every opportunity to steward their lives well.
Q: Do you have a favorite quote or moment from the book you’d like to share?
A: I talk about pancakes and cake several times. I have five kids and they love both, so naturally I had to add that into the book. There are so many quotes I could choose from, but here is one that reminds us to enjoy the simple things as we give all the glory to God. A life lived well includes celebration, laughter, and grace — not just rules and restraint. To sum it up nicely: true wholeness comes from intentional living, grateful stewardship, persistent faith, wholehearted love, and the humility to enjoy life’s sweetness without losing balance.
“So, as you continue your journey, chasing wholeness and pursuing the purpose God placed in you, don’t forget to do what we talked about from day one: Move with intention. Eat with gratitude. Pray with persistence. Love with your whole heart. And yes — save room for the cake.”
Q: What was the biggest challenge in writing or publishing it?
A: The biggest challenge was learning to write from the heart instead of the head. I’ve spent years writing academically, where precision, structure, and detachment are expected. This book required the opposite. It asked me to be personal, vulnerable, and honest about moments of struggle, doubt, and growth. Publishing it also meant trusting that the message didn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Letting go of control and allowing faith, lived experience, and grace to lead the process was both the hardest part, and ultimately the most rewarding.
Q: What’s next for you as a writer?
A: I am working on my second book, Faith, Focus, and Fatherhood: Building Strong Homes in a Weary World. I am also leaving the door open for fiction writing and the possibility of a Cheer Dad book in the future!
